Campus Residential Program
In December 1994, The Homestead opened the first of six four-bedroom homes on 80 acres of farmland in Pleasant Hill, Iowa (just east of Des Moines). Today, 24 men and women live and work at The Homestead's campus residential program. Each of the six homes offers private bedrooms, a common living area, kitchen and dining room.
Our professionals work around the clock to meet the needs of individuals with autism by helping them gain the skills necessary to complete daily chores, grooming, planning and participating in recreational activities and leisure skills, and communication skills. Individuals served by this program also receive assistance and support with vocational and educational opportunities.
The campus residential program is home to a working farm operation. Individuals served will participate in paid work opportunities helping to grow "certified naturally grown" produce which supplies a wide variety of different fruits and vegetables to area residents.
Trained professionals work 24 hours a day. Typically there are two associates for every four individuals served during waking hours and one for every four individuals during the overnight hours.
The program is licensed as an Intermediate Care Facility for People With Mental Retardation (ICF/MR).
